styles of Yoga

At Yoga Embrace Studio, I wanted to bring a variety of styles of yoga as there are so many benefits of each one and no style is the same as the other! So if you think you simply “don’t like yoga” make sure you try them ALL out because there are so many and there will be one that resonates with you.

Yin Yoga targets our fascia (connective tissues) of the physical body but also helps stimulate prana (chi) life force energy into our meridian lines. It is a deeply meditative practice allowing us to fully slow down and soother the nervous system.

Restorative Yoga is a deeply relaxing style, going deeper into a meditative state and helping to soother the mind, body and soul.

Beginners Yoga (hatha) is a slower paced style but focuses on building strength and flexibility in the muscles. A class generally starts off on the floor and we work up to a standing sequence with modifications, hands on adjustments and thorough instruction and guidance on how to move correctly and safely through your practice. The poses chosen for this class will always be suitable for beginners.

Vinyasa Flow - suitable for some beginners who are able to get themselves up and down from the floor and have a willingness to try and develop or deepen their practice. Typically in a vinyasa flow class you are moving with the breath (either exhale or inhale) seamlessly from pose to pose.

Ashtanag Led Primary - this is a relatively new style to the studio. Ashtanga is steeped in tradition and is a set sequence that never changes. You will find advanced asanas such has headstand in this practice - although you are not required to be able to do all of the poses it is necessary to have a willingness to learn and step out your comfort zones. The pace is fast and the session lasts typically an hour and a half. By the end you will feel stretched from head to toe, sweaty and energised! It’s my favourite of all the styles and it is now my personal practice.

TYPES OF CLASSES

Hatha Yoga at Yoga Embrace

Hatha Yoga at Yoga Embrace

Hatha

Hatha translates as sun and moon and is the umbrella of all the styles of yoga. Today Hatha is recognised as a more gentle and slow-paced yoga style.

I have developed a unique style of Hatha yoga class as I take a holistic approach. I use weekly themes that can be felt throughout the session and usually incorporate pranayama (breathing exercise), a Mudra (hand gesture/energy seal), asana (postures), relaxation and meditation.

My Hatha classes are perfect for the absolute beginner as we go through the postures slowly, with plenty of ways to modify the postures to suit your body and abilities. Yoga should be inclusive to all, and that’s what you will find in my Hatha yoga classes. I take a “less is more” approach and encourage you to “be kind” and “listen to your body” throughout these sessions.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa

Vinyasa translates as “to place” in a unique or sacred way. We say vinyasa to explain one posture linked to the next to create a flowing and seamless sequence. Vinyasa today is recognised as a more dynamic style of yoga.

My Vinyasa classes will work with the breath, flowing seamlessly from one pose to another while building strength, stamina and flexibility. These sessions will leave you feeling hot, sweaty, invigorated and deeply stretched out, ready for relaxation.

Less suitable for beginners but still offers modifications. This class is a mixed-ability class at an intense level.

Ashtanga Led Primary

The Ashtanga Primary Series is a set sequence of asanas (postures) that forms the foundation of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, this practice consists of a specific order of postures that are linked together with vinyasas (movement-breath coordination). The primary series is known as Yoga Chikitsa, which means “yoga therapy,” as it is designed to detoxify and purify the body, mind, and spirit.

The primary series is a challenging and dynamic practice that focuses on building strength, flexibility, and stamina.

It begins with sun salutations (Surya Namaskara A and B) to warm up the body and establish a steady breath. Following the sun salutations, there are a series of standing, seated, and finishing postures. Each posture is designed to prepare the body for the next, creating a flowing and continuous practice.

Yoga Sound Bath

Sound Bath

Enjoy the beautiful relaxing sounds of Crystal singing bowls and Koshi chimes and the deep vibrations of the Tibetan Gong whilst being guided on an inward journey (yoga nidra).

Simply lie down, get comfortable and prepare to be guided into a deep state of bliss.

This practice flows through all five Koshas (layers of being), balances all seven Chakras (energetic centres) and helps the flow of prana (vital life force energy).

Deeply relaxing and has many scientifically proven health benefits:

Feeling calmer/less stressed - reduces anxiety and eases depression.

  • Muscles that feel looser.

  • A greater sense of relaxation.

  • Pain relief.

  • The ability to sleep better.

  • Improved mood.
